Hosts and defending champions Australia will lock horns with Ireland in their penultimate fixture of the Super 12 stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday, November 1. The Aussies bounced back against Sri Lanka following their massive loss at the hands of New Zealand in the first match of the Super 12 stage.

The Aaron Finch-led side will look to continue their winning momentum as both their forthcoming clashes are do-or-die clashes if they are to make it to the semi-finals from here. Whereas, the Irish side are coming into this game with a point earned in the Afghanistan fixture as the match was abandoned due to rain.

The two clashed once in the marquee tournament, almost a decade ago in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2012 where Australia comfortably won the fixture and they will be looking for a similar result at The Gabba.

Let’s look at Australia’s probable playing XI against Ireland

Openers: David Warner, Aaron Finch (c)

Both the openers have not hit the ground running for the side in either of the two outings against New Zealand or Sri Lanka. Warner is known to be an explosive hitter of the ball and can hand the side big runs on his day.

Whereas skipper Aaron Finch played a slow knock against Sri Lanka in their previous fixture. The right-hander tried to get a few big ones but was clearly unable to connect the ball which led him to frustration at a point during his unbeaten 31-ball 42. However, the duo will look to turn things around and aim to build a solid partnership from here on.

Middle-order and All-rounders: Matthew Wade, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David

Experienced wicketkeeper batter, Matthew Wade can gauge the situation of the game and play accordingly. His versatility adds a lot of depth to the squad. Moreover, he has the potential to come lower down the order and smack a few off the ground that can prove to be a crucial point for the side.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh have not had the best of times yet in the marquee tournament. The former, however, has been able to deliver with the ball if not with the bat but Marsh will need to rise to the occasion considering there are only two matches left in the Super 12 stage for his side and the Aussies need to give it their all to win both fixtures.

Marcus Stoinis played an extraordinary innings against Sri Lanka with his majestic knock of 59 runs off just 18 balls. The all-rounder was aware that the net run rate is something the side will have to work on, so he swiftly shifted gears and dispatched a few into the stands against the island nation.

Finch may not replace Tim David as he is likely to continue in the match against Ireland and will need to prove his worth in this fixture and moving forward.

Bowlers: Pat Cummins, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood found their form in the match against the Lankan Lions as the duo in the pace bowling department picked up two wickets between them and gave just 49 runs in their eight overs combined. The two will look to scalp many more in the game against Ireland.

Pat Cummins proved to be the costliest of the lot in the match against the Asia Cup 2022 winners as he leaked 36 runs in his stipulated four overs at an economy of 9.00. Ashton Agar had a great outing with the ball against the Lankan Lions as the spinner scalped a wicket and gave away just 25 runs at an economy rate of 6.25.

While the bowling department has the potential to restrict even the big sides to a small total, the Australian conditions are such that any team can use them to their advantage and dispatch a few out of the park. In any case, the bowlers will look to dismantle the Irish batters soon to better their net run rate.

Australia predicted XI against Ireland:

David Warner, Aaron Finch (c), Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood
