Ahead of the 2009 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) showed belief in an up-and-coming talent from the Australian cricketing circle, named, David Warner, and drafted him into their side. However, very few would have imagined that the Paddington-born would go on to become one of the legends of the cash-rich league.
In Warner’s debut IPL season, he showed glimpses of brilliance but was not quite consistent with the bat. He aggregated 163 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 123.48. However, the southpaw redeemed himself in the following season and hammered 282 runs in 11 matches at a superb strike rate of 147.64, which includes a blistering century against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Courtesy of his exploits in IPL 2010, Warner became an integral part of the Delhi franchise. The ace batter was one of the team’s first-choice opening batters along with Virender Sehwag and he did a decent job in the fourth edition of the cash-rich league, scoring 324 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 117.39.
The 2012 season saw Warner yet again leave the world in awe of his performances as he plundered 256 runs in eight outings at a stunning strike rate of 164.10. The Australian was quite prolific in the coming season too and piled on 410 runs in 16 games for the side.
Due to his consistent performances in the IPL arena, Warner became one of the sought-after in the league. Thus, when his turn arrived at the IPL 2014 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad went all guns blazing to sign him and eventually paid INR 5.5 crore to acquire his services.
Warner was simply sensational in his first season for the Hyderabad franchise and accumulated 528 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 140.80. He was handed the leadership duties in IPL 2015 and the ace batter led from the front, racking up 562 runs in 14 games at a superb strike rate of 156.54, which consisted of seven half-centuries. The dashing stroke maker also won the Orange Cap of the season.

In the 2016 season of the lucrative T20 tournament, Warner batted like a dream and obliterated bowling attacks with his marauding bat. He amassed a staggering tally of 848 runs in 17 matches at an excellent strike rate of 151.42, which included nine half-centuries. Also, the Australian batter marshaled his troops very well and was spot-on with his on-field tactics. The southpaw’s exploits were instrumental in SRH clinching their maiden IPL title.
Warner carried his good work for the Hyderabad franchise in the next season and piled on runs for fun. The flamboyant batter aggregated 641 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 141.81, which comprised a century and four half-centuries. His incredible tally of runs was the most by a batter in IPL 2017.
However, Warner did not don the SRH jersey in the 11th edition of the cash-rich league as he was banned from the IPL season for his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.
But the veteran batter made an astonishing comeback to the marquee event in 2019 and knocked the winds of bowling attacks that came his way. He plundered 692 runs in 12 matches at a spectacular average of 69.20 and ended up as the leading run-getter of the season.
Warner was again magnificent with the bat in the following season of the T20 extravaganza. He took the attack to the opposition right from the get-go and provided Hyderabad with crackling starts. The Paddington-born notched up 548 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 134.64, which consisted of four half-centuries.
However, the star batter was nowhere close to his best in IPL 2021 and had a horror show with the bat. Warner could manage just 195 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 107.73. Also, his relations with the team management turned sour and as a result, SRH decided against retaining him for the coming season.
Warner featured in the 2022 mega auction and Delhi Capitals went all guns blazing to rope him into their side. Finally, Delhi managed to sign him for INR 6.25 crore, and with it, the southpaw reunited with his first IPL franchise. The opening batter brought his A-game into play in the 15th IPL edition and took bowling attacks to the cleaners with his glorious strokeplay. He piled on 432 runs in 12 games for the Capitals at a strike rate of 150.52.
David Warner has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent performers in the Indian Premier League. He has featured in 162 IPL matches and racked up an insane tally of 5881 runs, which is the third most in the history of the marquee tournament. The veteran batter, in his illustrious IPL career thus far, has broken heaps of records and also created many.
