With captain Aaron Finch announcing his retirement from the 50-over format of the game, Australia correctly is looking for someone to replace the 35-year-old. A lot of names are currently being discussed but Cricket Australia has two more months in their hand before they decide on a player.

Not just ODIs, Aaron Finch might also call his time from T20I cricket after the World Cup in his home nation or at the end of the Australian summer. Given the situation that might arise, CA will likely buy some time and choose an ideal candidate who can represent the defending T20 World Champions in all white-ball cricket.

The likes of David Warner, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins and Alex Carey are currently leading the race to lead the Kangaroos. Out of which, David Warner is currently suspended from leading any Australian side after being involved in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. Steve Smith, also involved in same saga, is someone who’s not a regular in the side while Pat Cummins, the red-ball captain of the team feels it’s unrealistic for him to lead the side in all the formats.

“I think if you were going to do all the formats and every game, I don't think that's realistic. Especially as a fast bowler, I think you do need to find windows to rest. But I think you can manage that as well,” said the speedster at Kayo's cricket launch.

“It's not something I have really thought about. I am really happy with captaining the Test side.. I don't think they need to rush into any decision,” added Cummins, who missed 28 of the past 66 ODIs for the Aussies.

Any opportunity to captain would be a privilege: David Warner

The southpaw David Warner is currently the favourite candidate to lead the Kangaroos in the coming times. However, with nothing being guaranteed, he is currently playing the safe game. Even though he’s currently banned, Warner has expressed his desire to lead the team in the foreseeable future.

“I haven't had any conversations at all. But look, I think at the end of the day, any opportunity to captain would be a privilege. But, from my end, there's a lot of water to go under the bridge, to have those conversations with Cricket Australia and my main focus is just actually playing cricket,” said the 35-year-old.

Warner, who is in terrific form at the moment, believes that Pat Cummins is currently the favourite to take the job. He however is ready to sit down with the officials if any opportunities arise for the cricketer.

“Obviously, Pat has the Test captaincy and he will be offered the job if he wants to take it, and rightfully so,” said Warner.
