With the world preparing for veteran Australian batter David Warner’s farewell from the longest format, many have been discussing the future of Test cricket and how the longest format of the game is going to fare with the rise of shorter formats and franchise cricket leagues.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins came forward to raise the same issue as well. The 30-year-old revealed that he was worried about the future of Test cricket and relayed his wish for more people to want to watch the traditional format. Currently, Australia is taking on Pakistan in a three-game Test series on home soil, and the support from the fans has been impeccable. However, that has not stopped Cummins from worrying about what the future holds for Test cricket.
"It's a tough one. Every summer feels bigger than the last here in Australia, but obviously going overseas, that's not the case. In some regards, I am a little bit worried at times, but at the same time T20 cricket has never had more supporters and I don't think there have been more supporters in the world watching cricket. As a Test cricket lover, I wish everybody was watching Test cricket, but I've never seen cricket stronger than what it is at the moment,” Cummins was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
I think Marnus is the only one in his 20s now which he said a few times last week: Cummins
Furthermore, Pat Cummins shifted his focus onto ‘Warner Week' and opined that a change in the team’s top order would come faster in ODI cricket than in Test cricket. Besides, he also singled out Marnus Labuschagne as the youngest player in the current Test side which will play in Sydney as well. Notably, Labuschagne is currently 29 years old while the rest of his teammates are 30-plus in terms of age.
"I think Marnus is the only one in his 20s now, he said a few times last week. Really, there is going to be some rate of change over the next couple of years, we probably thought it was going to happen a little bit sooner but everyone is hanging on," the 30-year-old skipper further added.
"After this block of Test matches, we don't play again until next summer. So I don't see anything in the immediate future that is going to change. There's been some great opportunities for the young guys in Aussie A, even some ODI tours where a couple of the first XI guys have rested,” Cummins concluded.
