Punjab Kings (PBKS) have announced Mitchell Owen, the uncapped all-rounder from Australia, as the replacement for Glenn Maxwell. Notably, Maxwell has been ruled out of the IPL 2025 owing to a fracture to one his fingers, and has subsequently flown back to Australia. Now, the Tasmanian cricketer Owen has been roped in by the Punjab-based franchise as a part of their squad for the remainder of the season.

Owen has been granted a remuneration of INR 3 crore for joining the forces with the 2014 finalists. Interestingly, the cricketer is eligible to join the squad only after ending his ongoing PSL 2025 campaign, where he is representing Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi. The league in the neighbouring country, that ends on May 18, will have Owen stay back unless Peshawar fail to qualify. In such a situation, Owen will be playing for PBKS only if they make it to the top four of IPL 2025.

Owen had struck headlines following his 39-ball century with Hobart Hurricanes in the previous edition of the Big Bash League. The pro cricketer was also the highest run-getter for the side in the 2024-25 edition of the league, with 452 runs across 11 innings at an impressive average of 45.20. A decent part-timer with his right-arm mediums, he also took 3 wickets in as many innings and kept his economy rate pretty much under control, giving runs at 8.77.

The cricketer, as a result, definitely had form on his side coming into the PSL, however, his campaign portrays the run Peshawar are having in the season. Owen has scored a meagre 101 runs across seven games, with only two wickets so far. However, his strike-rate has been superlative, touching close to 200.00, and that is exactly what PBKS need right now, since they have been lacking good finishes despite decent starts.

It is noteworthy to mention that the Shreyas Iyer-led side is currently sitting fourth on the table with 13 points after six wins and a rain-curtailed encounter. They play Lucknow Super Giants next at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, and a win in this game will take them directly to the second spot, surpassing Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, second and third currently, respectively.
