Mohammed Shami is one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket at the moment. His ability to make the ball dance to his tunes and his upright seam position has received a lot of plaudits from experts around the world. However, while there have memorable moments on the field for the right-arm pacer, off it, life hasn't been very easy for the talented pace bowler.
Notably, on March 8, 2018, Shami's wife Haseen Jahan filed an FIR at Jadavpur Police Station against her husband, her brother-in-law, and other in-laws for allegedly torturing her and behaving cruelly. Multiple charges were slammed on the defendant.
In the same vein, on Wednesday, September 20, Shami appeared before the court. During the proceedings, the pacer's lawyer had placed a bail plea. As a result, after hearing his case, the court granted bail to Shami and his brother in the five-year-old case. This will come as a huge relief for the 33-year-old as he is set to feature in his third ODI World Cup next month in India.
"Police have filed a charge sheet against Md Shami and his brother. The law states that once the charge sheet is submitted, the accused will have to appear before the court and seek bail in self defense. Accordingly we appeared before the court today and moved a bail prayer. The court has granted bail to both the siblings. Shami will henceforth participate in the upcoming legal proceedings in this case as required in law," Shami's counsel Salim Rahaman was quoted as saying by The Telegraph
Mohammed Shami played only two games in Asia Cup 2023
Now speaking of on-the-field cricket action, Team India won the Asia Cup for a record-extending eighth time last week after defeating Sri Lanka in the finals in Colombo. The 'Men in Blue' were clinical throughout the tournament, losing only an inconsequential encounter against Bangladesh, when they rested many of their senior players.
Mohammed Shami, who is the fastest Indian bowler to 100 and 150 ODI wickets, was expected to play a crucial role during the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023. However, he played only two games against Nepal and Bangladesh, as India preferred to go in with only two frontline seamers and three all-rounders. Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel were rotated based on the conditions. This move came as a shock to quite a few experts as they felt that India should have kept Shami in the playing XI as he has the knack of picking up wickets.
The Amroha-born could get a few games in the three-match ODI series against Australia, preceding the ODI World Cup. That could be his chance to make a strong case for himself and get back in contention for a spot in the first XI when Rohit Sharma and Co. play their first match in the showpiece event on October 8, against Australia.
