The Indian team struggled against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four matches at the Asia Cup 2022, which led to their early exit, but their focus will now be on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. The Men in Blue will work on their weaknesses to try and break their ICC trophy drought by winning the marquee event.
The Asia Cup saw Rohit Sharma getting back to the hitting ways, and former India skipper Virat Kohli gaining his mojo back. Kohli went on to become the second-highest run-getter of the tournament and bagged his 71st international ton after a gap of more than two and a half years. But former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan believes that the Indian side took things lightly which resulted in their loss.
“On paper, they were the best team to win the Asia Cup. The kind of balance they had was great. But perhaps they took things a little lightly but the main reason for their losses in the Super 4 stage was the injury to Ravindra Jadeja. It really affected the balance of their side,” Asghar said in an interview with Hindustan Times.
India has a very good chance of winning World Cup: Asghar
With the World Cup approaching, Asghar Afghan feels that India has a good chance of winning if they work on the setbacks that they faced during the Asia Cup. The Men in Blue will expect their top order to be at their best, which includes Sharma, KL Rahul, and Kohli. Even Rahul has not been at his best since recovering from the injury, and he will be expecting to get back in shape during the home series against Australia and South Africa.
“India should support their players and the team. It's not like they are a bad team just because they didn't do well (in Asia Cup). These are part and parcel of the game. The World Cup is coming, and India has a very good chance,” Asghar added.
