Progress-driven Jonathan Trott on the verge of signing new Afghanistan deal

"I’m sure I’ll sign it but it’s making sure I get what’s right for the team. It’s the offer I want but it’s now about making sure the coaching support and coaching staff is what I want," Trott said.

Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, is all set to sign a contract extension with the national team as the side’s head coach. He is very close to agreeing to a one-year extension, and the offer comes after the side’s exceptional performances in the ODI World Cup 2023.

The former England cricketer revealed that he is happy with the details of the contract but wants to finalise the coaching staff before he signs the extension. Since taking over in July 2022, Trott has guided Afghanistan to new heights, where the side has registered many historic wins.

“I’m sure I’ll sign it but it’s making sure I get what’s right for the team. It’s the offer I want but it’s now about making sure the coaching support and coaching staff is what I want. There’s been some changes in the coaching stuff but it’s about making sure we have the right coaches in place to take the team forward, that we make sure we take a step forward, not a step backward,” Jonathan Trott was quoted as saying by the Independent.

I’m trying to put things in place: Trott

Furthermore, Trott opined that he is trying to put things in place within Afghanistan cricket. He revealed that he wants to leave the place better than he found it for his successor.

“I’m trying to put things in place. I try to make sure that when I leave something I’m leaving it better than how I found it. We’re making sure we can win as many games as we can, not for us but to make sure we set the standard for the next coach or the next Afghan side,” Trott said.

“It’s what I try to do and I’ll always do that as a coach. So that’s my focus and also having coaches or a mentality where you’re constantly pushing each other to get better,” he added.

Trott’s current deal is set to expire at the end of 2023, but with the extension, he will lead the side in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
