Sri Lanka mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Sri Lankan Army. The right-arm spinner who helped his team to lift the 2022 T20 Asia Cup was promoted on the grounds of exceptional sporting achievements.

Apart from Theekshana, several other local sportspersons who excelled in their respective sporting fields were handed cash incentives and awards for their achievements. In addition to Theekshana, T.T Algama, K.B.Y De Silva, and M.A.I.J Perera, who are players of the Sri Lankan National Netball team were given the awards after winning the Asian Netball Championship recently.

Similarly, bodybuilder Lance Corporal R.A.D.P Rajapaksha, who secured the Bronze medal in the Asian Bodybuilding Championship, was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

Major General WASS Wanasinghe RSP USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces Mullaittivu, Major General WBSM Abeysekera RSP USP, Director General Financial Management and Brigadier KAWNH Bandaranayake USP, Director, Army Sports were also present for the brief ceremony.

Maheesh Theekshana will be looking to repeat his Asia Cup antics in the T20 World Cup

The mystery spinner was recently bagged by the Johannesburg Super Kings for the upcoming SA20 League. However, the 22-year-old will be looking to give his best during the 2022 T20 World Cup and help his side to clinch the prized trophy. The Sri Lankan side will go into the competition running high on confidence as they recently won the 2022 Asia Cup.

The host nation lost its first match in the competition against Afghanistan but made a strong comeback after defeating Bangladesh. In their Super Four matches, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan before entering the finals.

Not many would have backed the Sri Lanka side to win the final match against Pakistan, but a spirited batting performance from Bhanuka Rajapaksa followed by an excellent bowling performance from Wanindu Hasaranga meant that the Lanka side lifted the Asia Cup for the sixth time.
