David Warner announced his retirement from the Tests and ODIs in January 2024 but the Australia opener remains available for the shortest format of the game. As a result, he was inducted into Australia’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Warner was an integral part of Australia’s World Cup 2023 winning squad. However, the southpaw feels the team would not need his services for another 50-over tournament.
After the T20 World Cup 2024, the top seven teams from 2023 ODI World Cup will contest the Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2025. Warner, 37, will find another 50-over World Cup dream a tough nut to crack.
While the talks of his potential consideration for Champions Trophy selection are underway, he emphasised the fearless approach of Australian cricket. He also added that individual interests are kept aside as the team comes first.

“They may not need me (about Australia's 2025 Champions Trophy campaign). We’ve always played fearless and I think that’s why we’ve been so successful over the last few years. We don’t care about our spot in a team, we just care about doing the best that we can, and making sure that whatever we’re doing, we’re trying to be that match winner,” Warner was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
“And the fortunate thing is that we’ve got so many of them. One might come off one day, the next day someone else will come off. So we just know that one person in that top six, if they can get anywhere between 60 to 80 runs at a good strike rate, we know we’re always going to post a good total," he added.
Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 Squad
Unlike Warner, Steven Smith was left out of the Australia T20 World Cup squad. The move came as the right-handed batter continued his dismal form in T20Is. He even opened for Sydney Sixers in the BBL 2023, but the rough patch continued to get stuck behind his back.
