Batting stalwart Virat Kohli’s return to domestic cricket already created headlines.  However, the former India captain, after delivering two standout performances for Delhi in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, is expected to feature in one more match before India’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.

Kohli made a rare return to domestic 50-over cricket after a gap of nearly 15 years, following the BCCI’s directive that centrally contracted players must participate in at least two domestic matches when not on international duty. The decision was focused on strengthening domestic tournaments while ensuring senior players remain in rhythm. Kohli turned out for Delhi against Andhra and Gujarat and made the most of his return.

As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Kohli is likely to play Delhi’s January 6 clash against Railways, just days before the ODI series against New Zealand begins on January 11. While there has been no official confirmation yet.

His performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy have been nothing short of impressive. Chasing a target of 299 against Andhra, he smashed 131. The right-handed batter followed it up with a 77 against Gujarat while batting first, an innings that earned him the Player of the Match award as Delhi secured a narrow seven-run victory.

Interestingly, Kohli had initially left the Delhi squad after fulfilling the BCCI’s two-match requirement. However, his jersey and kit remaining with the team have fueled speculation of a return. According to senior journalists tracking the development, the decision will largely depend on the BCCI’s schedule regarding travel and pre-series training camps for the New Zealand series.

Delhi would be keen to have Kohli for one more outing, not just for his runs but also for the leadership and confidence he instills in a relatively young side. His presence has reportedly had a positive influence in the dressing room.
