Defending champions Australia and reigning Asian Champions Sri Lanka are all set to lock horns in the 19th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Perth Stadium. While Sri Lanka is coming off a victory in the previous game against Ireland, Australia faced a humiliating defeat against New Zealand in their campaign opener as they lost the contest by 89 runs.
Australia, by virtue of their points table standing, had qualified for the Super 12 stage T20 World Cup 2022 early on, but Sri Lanka had to carve their path towards the second round after emerging on top of the Group A points table in the first round. The Aaron Finch-led side will now be looking for a redemption and would be hoping to open their account in the tournament.
In Australia’s first game against the previous year’s finalists New Zealand, the Kane Williamson-led side batted first and put up a humungous 200/3 on the scoreboard. Given Australia’s batting unit, it looked like they would chase it down, but the Kiwi bowlers put forth a nightmare and dished Australia out for mere 111 runs during their chase.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, bowled first in the game against Ireland. The bowlers did a tremendous job and restricted the Irish batters to a par score of 128/8 in 20 overs. In reply, the Sri Lankan top-order batters pulled off a brilliant chase and punished the Irish bowlers. While Kusal Mendis remained unbeaten for a 43-ball 68, Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka added 31 runs each and Sri Lanka won the game by a whopping nine wickets.
The two teams last met when Australia had traveled to Sri Lanka for a multi-format series earlier this year. The tour comprised of three T20Is, five ODIs, and a couple of Test matches. While Australia claimed a win in the T20I series by winning it 2-1, Sri Lanka scripted history by defeating a full-member Australian side in the ODI series by 3-2. It was a thrilling series, and fans would have similar expectations from the upcoming game.
Pitch Conditions
Although Perth's pitch may be flatter than usual, the pace bowlers should expect to get some assistance from the surface later. This match is expected to be played on what is traditionally regarded as a batting-friendly surface. On this track, the spinners receive limited support.
Playing Combinations for AUS vs SL
Australia
Though the Australian side lost the first game, they will look to go ahead with a similar combination. Until and unless there is any injury concerns, Australia should look to continue with the same bunch of players and get the momentum going.
Predicted Playing XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a winning form, and they would not want to break it by making any changes in their XI. Thus, the Dasun Shanaka-led side is also unlikely to make any changes.
Predicted Playing XI: Kusal Mendis (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Ashen Bandara, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara
