Day 2 of the third Test between India and England at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London turned out to be an attritional affair as both teams tried to wrestle the momentum in their favour. However, the game remains intriguingly poised heading into Day 3.

Joe Root brought up his 37th Test century with a streaky shot off the first ball of the day, which went to the boundary past gully. He became only the third batter to register three consecutive centuries at Lord's. While the start of the day belonged to England, with Root notching up a personal milestone, Jasprit Bumrah quickly turned the tide in India's favour by picking up three wickets in the space of seven balls.

He started by dismissing Ben Stokes in the fifth over of the day. The right-arm pacer followed it up by sending Root (104) and Chris Woakes (0) back to the hut off successive deliveries in his following over. From 260/4, England slumped to 271/7.

Jamie Smith was given a reprieve by KL Rahul when he was batting on five. The in-form wicketkeeper-batter made India pay as he amassed a quickfire half-century. He forged an 84-run partnership in quick time with Brydon Carse, who also brought up his maiden fifty in international cricket. Mohammed Siraj got the better of the two players, showing a lot of grit and determination in testing conditions. Meanwhile, Bumrah dismissed Jofra Archer to pick up his first five-wicket haul at the Home of Cricket.

England were bowled out for 387 in 112.3 overs. Apart from Bumrah's five-for, Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with two wickets apiece.

In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a blazing start, hitting three boundaries before falling victim to the returning Archer. The Mumbai batter made 13 runs off eight balls before returning to the hut. Karun Nair joined KL Rahul in the middle, and the duo formed a crucial 61-run stand. Nair showed a lot of resilience to get to 40 runs off 62 balls, but a stunning one-handed catch from Joe Root at first slip ended his stay at the crease.

Chris Woakes wasn't at his best, but he received a massive morale boost when he dismissed the in-form Shubman Gill for 16. Smith was standing up to the stumps to stop Gill from standing outside the crease and negating whatever swing there was on offer. The move paid dividends as the Punjab batter edged one through to the keeper, who made no mistake.

Pant came out to bat and looked in discomfort as he has been nursing a finger injury. However, the wicketkeeper-batter persevered and took India through to Stumps with Rahul (53*) for company. India reached 145/3 in 43 overs and are still 242 runs adrift of England's first-innings total.
