Parvez Hossain Emon slammed his maiden T20I century to guide Bangladesh to a 27-run victory over the United Arab Emirates in the first T20I of the two-match series at Sharjah on Saturday, May 17. The 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter smashed 100 off just 54 balls, helping the visitors post 191/7 before the bowlers restricted the hosts to 164 in reply.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Bangladesh lost opener Tanzid Hasan early, but Parvez held one end solidly. He smashed five fours and nine sixes, registering a new Bangladesh record for most sixes in a T20I innings. He also became only the second Bangladeshi to score a T20I hundred after Tamim Iqbal’s 103* in the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Notably, Parvez hit three straight sixes off Sanchit Sharma and cleared the stadium with a huge hit off Matiullah Khan. He reached his half-century in the ninth over and kept going, despite wickets falling at regular intervals. Meanwhile, he was caught on 84 but was granted a lifeline as the bowler had overstepped. He capitalised the opportunity by bringing up his century with a quick single before being dismissed on the very next ball.

For the UAE, left-arm pacer Muhammad Jawadullah was the pick of the bowlers, registering a four-wicket haul, including the scalps of Litton Das, Mahedi Hasan, Shamim Hossain, and finally Parvez in the 20th over.

In reply, the hosts began on a good note, with skipper Muhammad Waseem smashing off-spinner Mahedi Hasan for six off the very first ball. Waseem then took on Tanzim Hasan and Tanvir Islam to bring up a 32-ball fifty. Rahul Chopra also chipped in with a quick 35, putting the hosts in a strong position at 103/2 in the 12th over.

Asif Khan went on to accelerate the innings with a 21-ball 42, including three consecutive sixes off Mahedi Hasan. However, Bangladesh’s bowlers made a strong comeback in the death overs and did not let the UAE batters free their hands, picking regular wickets to seal an important win.
