Opener Dawid Malan smashed his highest score of 140 while Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root also hit their respective half-centuries as England posted a mammoth total of 364/9, eventually winning the encounter by a big margin of 137 runs against Bangladesh in Match No. seven of the ongoing World Cup in Dharamsala. The defending champions got off the mark after losing the tournament opener against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Speaking about how the game unfolded at the picturesque venue, skipper Shakib al Hasan won the toss, and Bangladesh elected to field first. Bairstow struck 52 off 59 while England’s Mr. Consistent racked up 82 off 68. Captain Jos Buttler and Harry Brook scored 20 each but the innings were beautifully set up by the left-hander Malan.

The 36-year-old faced just 107 deliveries for his 140 which included 16 fours and five maximums. Spinner Mahedi Hasan was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers for his spell of 4/71, his best figures in one-day internationals. In reply, Litton Das started off well as he looked in good nick for his knock of 76 off 66. The middle order failed to contribute as Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz all got dismissed for single digits.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim scored 51 while youngster Towhid Hridoy mustered 39 but it was just not enough for the Bangla Tigers. All the English bowlers were amongst the wickets as Shakib’s side got bundled out for 227 in 48.2 overs. For his splendid century upfront, Malan grabbed the Player of the Match award.
