Former Indian cricketer and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has been approached by Cricket South Africa, to be part of the newly unveiled T20 league. Gavaskar is required to be a member of the advisory board of the league, that is expected to take off this December.

The offer that CSA has on board for the former Indian cricketer is understandable because the CSA has positioned the tournament as a global event, and not a South Africa domestic league. The Indian batsman has earlier been a part of the governing body of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a flagship T20 tournament. Gavaskar, of course, was appointed by the Supreme Court of India to head the IPL in 2014 and the CSA feels that he is the right person to lead.

Official confirmation awaited

However, the Little Master will not be the only member of the board, while other names are yet decided by the cricketing board. There has been no official confirmation from the board as of now, regarding the members of the committee. Neither Gavaskar did confirm to the Mumbai Mirror that Cricket South Africa have tabled him an offer.

According to the Mirror, “There is no immediate information if Gavaskar has accepted the offer. A couple of CSA franchises are also interested in having Gavaskar on board and the commentator-turned-former- captain is yet to decide on the matter.”

The advisory panel, however, will be starkly different from the board in the IPL, which unlike the the Indian counterpart will have two representatives from each franchise. The league already has four Indian owners, with Delhi Daredevils owner GMR group bring one of them. The other is Kolkata Knight Riders, who are looking to spread across their fan base from India to South Africa.

Two NRIs – from Dubai and Hong Kong – have also purchased teams in the league which has ownership from Pakistan as well while only two South African investors are on board.
