Aaron Finch, the Australian opener, had a good season in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). He was a part of the Gujarat Lions (GL) squad, who were the table toppers in the league stage and ended up at the 3 spot at the end of the league.

The Champion side Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was led by his countryman and opening partner, David Warner. Sunrisers beat the mighty strong Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2016 final.

Finch said that Warner is ‘absolutely’ ready to lead the national team. Currently, Steve Smith is captaining Australia in all formats of the game, but some of the former cricketers like Ian Chappell and Ricky Ponting had voiced their concern that the workload could be immense on Smith.

Finch also feels that if an opportunity comes, Warner would do amazing job as captain. “Absolutely (ready for captaincy). I think a part of that is having confidence in your own game but also having the confidence of your teammates in your own game as well, that you’re almost the number one picked player. And (Warner is) certainly that, along with Steve. They’ve been exceptional for a long time now and as captain and vice-captain they’ve done a fantastic job,” Finch told cricket.com.au on Thursday.

“I think if something did happen and (Warner) had to take over, he’d do an amazing job as well,” he added.

Despite not having the best of the starts to the tournament, Warner led Sunrisers team really well with the bat and on the field. Finch explained Warner’s performance – “To lead the Sunrisers to the title I think shows how much he loved the responsibility of captaining,” he said. “He led from the front with the bat, in the field he led from the front and I think as a captain he was someone who captained the way that he plays. He always took the aggressive option, he never backed down. They didn’t start off the tournament overly well but I think he stuck to his guns, stuck to what he believed was right and they got the job done.”

In the final, Warner showed how bold he is by electing to bat first in the final despite chasing being the trend of the season. He showed faith in his strong pace bowling attack and it paid off as they won the title.

“It’s all about backing your ability and backing what you think is the right thing at the right time and he certainly did that. The way he dominated the tournament with the bat, but also winning close games in finals shows a lot of character from a team and a leader, so he was outstanding,” opined Finch.
