The ever calm and composed Kane Williamson has always been looked upon as the perfect skipper required by a team. And there’s no doubt in that, looking at the way he has led New Zealand, and the first-ever World Test Championship where he led his team towards a massive victory against India.

Williamson will be leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League, but he doesn’t see himself the way his fans do. For the cricket fans, he is perceived as the perfect skipper that the team has, just like the impression MS Dhoni had. But Williamson has a totally opposite frame of mind.

Speaking to Boria Majumdar on his show ‘Backstage with Boria’ on YouTube, Williamson shared his viewpoint of the role a captain has to play. “I don’t think there is a perfect one (captain), and if there is, it certainly isn’t me. It is pretty much a job and a challenge to be embraced. You can have your ideas and philosophies, but in the end, it needs to marry up with the group voice and then you try and find a place where you can operate in a harmonious way,” he said.

The shorter the event, the result can be more fickle: Kane Williamson

He credited all his teammates for the success of New Zealand as a team and believes that every member of the group, be it a player, team management, or the support staff, has a role to play behind a captain’s success. “I believe it is also important to have really good people around you that are really committed to the cause and the common goal. Here in New Zealand we certainly have that as there are a number of leaders and support staff that play a big role as well,” he added.

“For us, how we operate is specific to the people and the environment. Every team is a little bit different and you turn up for the events and so many different things can happen on the day. The shorter the event, perhaps the result can be more fickle,” Williamson said in his concluding statements stating that the team’s focus will remain to be on the process and the growth of the team as a unit.

Williamson’s IPL franchise SRH released a bunch of big players before the mega auction. The team faced a lot of backlash when they rested David Warner last season and handed over the captaincy to Williamson mid-season. It will be stimulating to see what plans and strategies Williamson comes up with to move forward in the league with a whole lot of new entrants.

SRH will be kicking off their campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 29 at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
