India’s head coach Ravi Shastri has contracted COVID-19. His RT-PCR test also returned with a positive result and he will now have to undergo 10 days of isolation. The other three support staff members Bharat Arun, Nitin Patel and R Sridhar have been deemed as close contacts and are expected to continue their isolation as well. The results of their RT-PCR tests are still not known.

It all started when Shastri’s lateral flow test for COVID returned positive on the evening of September 4. Soon he and the other support staff members isolated themselves while all the players soon underwent lateral flow tests twice before play on Day 4. Once they returned negative results, then only they were allowed to travel to The Oval.

Ravi Shastri also has mild symptoms like sore throat and is isolating at the moment. It is being speculated that the 59-year-old might have contracted the virus after attending the launch of his book in the team hotel. Outside guests were allowed for the event. Also, Bharat Arun, Nitin Patel and Sridhar had attended the launch in person.

“After testing positive in two lateral flow test, Shastri has also returned a positive result in RT-PCR test. He has mild symptoms like sore throat. He will undergo 10 days of isolation,” a BCCI source said according to India TV.

None of the four members likely for Manchester Test

Ravi Shastri has now been effectively ruled out from the Manchester Test. He won’t be traveling with the team and will have to return two negative tests post the completion of his isolation to travel back home. Meanwhile, the bowling coach, fielding coach and the physiotherapist – B Arun, Nitin Patel and R Sridhar – may also have to miss out on the fifth and final Test.

With Shastri returning positive, even their isolation period could be extended now with the BCCI medical team keeping them under observation. This is a blow for India’s preparations before the final Test as only the batting coach Vikram Rathour is only left in the dressing room now among the support staff apart from a few other members. Meanwhile, India will try to seal the Oval Test on final day before looking forward to the challenge in Manchester.
