In an unfortunate turn of events and what can be termed as an end of an era, Sarah Taylor, 30, has decided to retire from international cricket with immediate effect. In a press release, the English Cricket Board (ECB) cited that Taylor’s recurring anxiety issues has caused a big dent in her ability to enjoy the game in recent times, and it was the main reason behind her decision to call it quits.
Taylor made her England debut in 2006 and went on to rack up 6,553 International runs- 2nd most by an English Women. But, it was really her magnetic keeping skills, her innovations that created waves across the cricketing folklore; one which saw her top the charts as far as most dismissals [232] by a wicket-keeper in Women Cricket is concerned.
“This has been a tough decision but I know it’s the right one, for me and for my health moving forward,” Sarah Taylor said. “I can’t thank my teammates enough, both past and present, and the ECB for being supporters and friends along my journey.”
“Playing for England and getting to wear the shirt for so long has been a dream come true and I have been blessed with so many great moments throughout my career. From making my debut in 2006 to Ashes wins, and of course, the World Cup final at Lord’s, to name just a few,” Taylor said.
We are very grateful for Sarah
Clare Connor, the Managing Director of Women’s cricket congratulated Sarah on an outstanding career and for being a powerful face of Women’s sport.
“We are very grateful to Sarah for her contributions to English cricket over the last 13 years. She has become a powerful voice within women’s sport and I’m sure she will make a success of the next stage of her professional life. We all wish her the very best.”
Unfortunately, Taylor’s retirement comes a day after Marcus Trescothick- another cricketer who retired from international cricket in his peak due to anxiety issues- walked into the sunset, proving once again how sportsman competing at the top-level are vulnerable to mental issues; one which can’t be ignored.
