England’s World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan, on June 28 (Tuesday) announced his retirement from the international arena. The left-handed batter contributed heavily to England cricket not only with the bat but also with his leadership skills as well. The Three Lions, under the captaincy of Morgan, went on to win the 2019 World Cup after defeating New Zealand in one of the most dramatic cricket matches played in the history of the game.

After his retirement, the veteran batter will now be donning the commentary hat as he has joined the commentary team for all England men’s white-ball games this summer. The home side will take on a tough-looking opponent in form of India in a three-match T20I series followed by the same number of ODIs. The series will mark the start of Morgan’s commentary stint after retirement.

Talking more about Morgan’s captaincy, the left-handed batter was named as England’s ODI and T20I captain in late 2014. However, the Three Lions suffered a huge setback during the 2015 World Cup as they lost to Bangladesh and got knocked out of the tournament. Following the debacle in the mega event, England made some big changes to their squad with several new faces included in the team.

Under the leadership of Morgan, England started playing a new brand of aggressive cricket in the 50-over format and soon tasted success after winning the 50-over World Cup. Notably, the English team has also stroked 400+ scores on a few occasions and were nearly successful in breaching the 500-run mark after falling short by just two runs against the Netherlands recently.

With the team doing so well and Morgan not contributing much, the skipper thought that it was time to draw curtains on his international career. Talking about his numbers in the international arena, the left-handed batter played 248 ODI matches and scored 7701 at an average of almost 40. In T20Is, Morgan scored 2458 runs in 115 matches at a strike rate of 136.17. He also represented England in the longest format of the game, scoring 700 runs in 16 matches with 130 being his highest score.
