Faf du Plessis announces his retirement plans

South Africa recently trumped Australia in their own den in the three-match ODI series by 2-1. In the lead up to the World Cup, this performance from the Proteas must give a huge sigh of relief to the skipper Faf du Plessis who has been the rock of the side. But at the age of 34, there are questions on his retirement as well and many feel that he will be hanging his boots after the showpiece event in England next year. However, he has cleared now that the World T20 in 2020 in Australia will be his swansong.

He was in a great touch with the bat returning from injury during the ODIs. Faf came back in the side during the third match against Zimbabwe back home and has looked in decent touch since then. In the recent series against the Aussies, he amassed 182 runs and scored 125 runs in the decider in Hobart stitching a match-winning partnership with David Miller.

Du Plessis answers the retirement question

“The T20 World Cup in 2020 is something I’m really looking forward to. I think right now that will probably be the last tournament for me,” Du Plessis said ahead of the one-off T20I against Australia in Brisbane. After winning the ODI series, the visitors will be keen on ending the short tour on a winning note.

Though his career has been ridden with injuries of late, Faf du Plessis has been the best batsman for South Africa after AB de Villiers‘ retirement. He will have to carry the team forward now and no wonder is looking forward to the World T20 which will be played after two years. The South African skipper has played 41 T20Is so far scoring 1237 runs at an impressive average of 35.34 as consistency is his main forte across all the formats.

As far as the World T20 is concerned, it will be played between October 18 and November 15 across eight Australian cities.
