Real Madrid, on Thursday, clinched their 34th league title by registering a 2-1 victory over Villareal. Real Madrid, continuing their impressive run since the return of football amid COVID-19 pandemic, lifted their first league title in three seasons.
Real Madrid’s striker Karim Benzema found the back of the net twice against Villareal as they sealed their second title triumph under coach Zinedine Zidane. Moreover, arch-rivals Barcelona lost 2-1 to Osasuna, extending the gap between both the heavyweight teams in the points table. Real Madrid, post the victory, stand head and shoulders above Barcelona with a seven-point lead.
Madrid won 10 of their matches after the restart of the league while Barcelona stumbled to fall back in the title race. Following Real Madrid’s emphatic win, social media was flooded with wishes for ‘Los Blancos’. Fans all across the globe flooded Twitter with congratulatory messages and many well-known sportspersons also joined the bandwagon.
One of them was India’s limited-overs deputy Rohit Sharma, who is an ardent Madrid fan. Rohit, on the occasion of Madrid’s title triumph, congratulated them and said that it was a ‘good news’ in a year that has been filled with shortcomings due to COVID-19 debacle.

“Another title in the bag. Real Madrid truly came together as a team during these tough times. Congratulations! Finally some good news in a year that is severely lacking any. #No34 #HalaMadrid @LaLiga @realmadrid” tweeted Rohit along with a picture of himself in Madrid’s jersey.

Earlier this year, Rohit had even visited Madrid’s home ground– Santiago Bernabeu– to watch the ‘El Clasico’ with wife Ritika. Regarded as one of the most prolific batsmen of the modern era, Rohit is the La Liga brand ambassador in India. He was invited by the league authorities to watch the ‘El Clasico’, where Madrid scripted a 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Barcelona.
Rohit had termed his experience of witnessing the encounter ‘surreal’. “Thanks, @laliga and @realmadrid for helping me tick this off my bucket list, what a surreal experience. My family and I had a blast. So memorable,” Rohit had written while sharing a photo at Santiago Bernabeu with wife Ritika.
Rohit’s New Zealand expedition was cut short after he suffered a calf injury just before the ODI series. The Mumbai Indians skipper was all set to brace the field in the thirteenth edition of the IPL. However, the league was postponed for an indefinite period considering the COVID-19 surge across the globe.
India has now crossed 1 million COVID-19 positive cases and the feasibility of the IPL looks bleak at the moment. However, the BCCI has stated that they’re trying their best to host the league in the latter phase of the year. Rohit, 33, is the most successful skipper in the history of the IPL with four titles under his belt.
