Gautam Gambhir's IPL captaincy career in numbers

Gautam Gambhir announced his decision to step down as the captain of the Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday after his team lost five of their first five matches. Gambhir, who returned to his home franchise after a gap of seven years, wasn’t at his best with the bat. He accumulated 85 runs in the five innings he batted that includes a 55 in the first game against KXIP. The 36-year-old is one of the three captains to win the IPL trophy twice and might not be seen taking up the responsibility again.

Here we look at some of the records and numbers from Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy career:

10 – Kolkata Knight Riders are the only team to win ten consecutive matches in the IPL. They won ten successive IPL matches they played in 2014 and 2015 editions. The longest IPL winning streak came under Gambhir’s captaincy only.

10 – Gambhir holds the dubious record of bagging most ducks as a captain in the IPL. The left-handed bagged a total of 12 ducks in the IPL with ten of them while leading the team.

107 – Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders in 107 consecutive Twenty20 games from 2011 and 2017. His streak began from the 2011 CLT20 after not featuring in the qualifying round games of the tournament. No other captain led a team in more than 70 consecutive T20 matches.

108 – Gautam Gambhir holds the record for leading an IPL team in most consecutive matches. He led KKR in all 108 IPL matches he played for the franchise. MS Dhoni holds an active streak of 104 matches as the captain of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Gambhir captained in 122 straight matches of his teams in the IPL from the 2010 season which is also a record. MS Dhoni led his teams in 113 consecutive IPL matches between 2010 and 2016.

129 – Gambhir is only next to MS Dhoni (148) to feature in more than 100 IPL matches as captain. Gambhir’s has a win-loss record of 71-57 as a captain in the IPL.

3518 – Runs Gautam Gambhir scored in the IPL as a captain. These are the most number of runs for any captain in IPL till date. Gambhir scored 31 fifties in the 127 IPL innings as a captain. Gambhir’s 4242 runs in the Twenty20 format as a captain are the 2nd most for any player.
