Nothing really has gone Mumbai Indians’ way in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as the five-time champions were the first team to be officially knocked out of the playoff race. The Rohit Sharma-led side still has some league-stage games left in the competition and they have nothing but pride to play for. Meanwhile, MI, on Thursday (May 12), thrashed Chennai Super Kings by five wickets to get a consolation win.

One of the chief architects of MI’s triumph was Tilak Varma, who played yet another stellar knock. Although MI only had to chase 98 to win, they lost four wickets inside 33 runs and seemed in a spot of bother. However, Tilak, who has been impressive throughout this season, showcased remarkable character and played a précised knock. He scored an unbeaten 34 off 32 balls as MI crossed the line pretty comfortably.

Tilak Varma has been brilliant in his first season: Rohit Sharma

As Tilak is just 19 and made his IPL debut this season, many are backing him to go a long way. MI skipper Rohit Sharma also belongs to the same category. The 35-year-old also believes the southpaw will become an all-format player for India in the future.

“He (Tilak) has been brilliant, playing for the first year, having such a calm head is never easy. I feel he’s going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He’s got the technique and temperament. A lot of things are looking bright for him. And there’s hunger as well,” stated Rohit after the game.

As far as his numbers are concerned, Tilak has so far scored 368 runs in 12 matches with his average and strike rate being over 40 and 130 respectively. With Tilak becoming a sensation in his maiden IPL season, it would be interesting to see what future has in store for him. Meanwhile, MI have two more games left in the season and they might want to test some of their other benched players.
