Playing first-class cricket together is rare for a father and son pair. However, the history of the gentleman’s game has been witness to quite a few instances where two or more members from the same family have played the game. This is what happened in the first match of the three-Test series between England and Pakistan.

While Stuart Broad essayed the role of a pacer in England’s playing XI, his father Chris Broad took up the match referee duties for the Test match at Manchester. Interestingly, the pacer has been docked 15% of his match fee by referee Chris for using inappropriate language against Yasir Shah during the match.

The incident took place during the 46th over of Pakistan’s second innings. Yasir had displayed brilliant batting skills in the opening minutes of Day 4 as he scored 34 runs off 24 balls including 5 fours and 1 six which helped Pakistan in setting a target of 277 runs. Thus when Broad dismissed Shah by having him caught behind he became excited and ended up using some inappropriate language.

Broad was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

This was Stuart’s third offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to three. This means that if Broad manages to gain one more demerit point in the upcoming Test match against Pakistan in Southampton, he could be handed a one-match suspension.

After the news of Stuart being fined by father Chris surfaced on social media, the 37-year-old gave a hilarious response to it via his official Twitter handle.

Twitter handle of England’s Barmy Army shared the news of Broad getting a demerit point by his dad on Tuesday. Reacting to this, Stuart jokingly said that his father would not be receiving a Christmas present and card from his side this year.

Chris Broad generally refrains himself from being a part of the same cricket match as his son. However, this time he has been handed the responsibility of overseeing all six of England’s home Tests this summer because of travel restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
