ODI World Cup Trophy is the most prestigious trophy in Cricket and getting their hands on the coveted trophy is the dream of every cricketer. However, it isn’t easy to win the title as a team has to cover all their weakness and enter the tournament with all the preparations whether it’s about batting, bowling, or fielding.
It probably won’t be wrong to say that the batters play an important role in helping their team to win a match, especially in the ODI format. However, to score big every team needs a great foundation by the opening batters if they stitch a big partnership, it becomes easy for the upcoming batter to score runs quickly.
The no. 1 partnership that comes to the list is the 282-run stand by the former Sri Lankan openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga. They were in their prime form during the 2011 edition of the grand event. Sri Lanka clashed against Zimbabwe in the 26th group stage match where Dilshan and Tharanga thrashed Zimbabwe’s bowlers with smashing centuries for themselves in the first innings.
The no. 2 position is occupied by the Australian pair of David Warner and Mitchell. The powerful duo striched a staggering 259-run opening stand against Pakistan in Banglaore in the 2023 edition. The former hammered 163 off 124 with 14 fours and nine sixes while Marsh struck 121 off 108 which included ten fours and nine maximums.
The no. 3 spot is once again acquired by the former Sri Lankan openers Tharanga and Dilshan. Sri Lanka were given a target of 229 runs in the 4th quarter-final match of the 2011 ODI World Cup. Both Dilshan and Tharanga stitched an unbeaten 231-run stand and helped the team to win the match by 10 wickets. It was England’s one of the most embarrassing losses in the history of the ODI World Cup.
Former Pakistan openers Wajahtullah Wasti and Saeed Anwar displayed an outstanding batting performance in the 1st semifinal of the 1999 World Cup against New Zealand. The Men in Green were given a target of 241 runs and the openers stitched a 194-run stand for the 1st wicket. Anwar smashed a brilliant hundred and went unbeaten on the score of 113 runs. It’d be interesting to see which team’s openers would be helpful for their team.
