'His contribution has been immense and we respect his decision' - BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla after Virat Kohli steps down as T20I captain

Virat Kohli also revealed that he had discussions with Head Coach Ravi Shastri as well as Rohit Sharma before taking the decision to step down as the skipper of the Indian side.

Indian cricketing legend Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down as the captain of the Indian T20I side after the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup that will be held in the months of October and November in the deserts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year.

And Rajeev Shukla, the Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stated that Kohli’s contribution in T20I cricket has been immense, both as batsman and captain.

Adding that he respects Kohli’s decision, Shukla reckoned that the Indian side will win the T20 World Cup this year under the leadership of Kohli.

“His contribution in T20Is has been immense, not just as a batsman, but also as a captain. Since it is his personal decision, we respect it and I am confident we can win the T20 World Cup under his leadership,” said Shukla as quoted by India Today.

Virat Kohli feels he has been fortunate to have led the Indian side

Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as the Indian T20I skipper on social media. Stating that he has been fortunate to have led the Indian cricket team, Kohli thanked his teammates, the support staff as well as the fans for their support.

The 32-year-old further added that he needs to manage his workload, and needs to give himself some space to lead the Indian side in ODIs as well as Test match cricket.

The cricket legend also revealed that he had discussions with Head Coach Ravi Shastri as well as Rohit Sharma before taking the decision to step down as the skipper of the Indian side. Kohli concluded his post by stating that he has spoken to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, Sourav Ganguly as well as Treasurer Jay Shah regarding his decision to step down.

India are slated to clash against their arch-rivals Pakistan in their first match of the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup on 24th October 2021. This match will be held in the city of Dubai.
