Alastair Cook has been struggling throughout the Ashes. As the Australians took a 3-0 unassailable lead in the series, pressure rose on Cook. There were calls to drop former England captain from the team, owing to his poor form. But the left-handed opening batsman answered his critics in style as he scored a brilliant double century.

Alastair Cook overtakes Brian Lara

Alastair Cook is unbeaten on 244, in the process he has overtaken Brian Lara in the all-time top scorers list to be on 6th position. When asked about how he felt about overtaking the legendary batsman, Cook joked that he felt sorry for Lara.

“I can’t really explain that. I just feel sorry for Brian Lara,” Cook said as quoted by the Cricinfo. The England batsman admitted that he feels happy to see his name up there with the greats of the game.

Cook is pleased with his innings

The left-handed batsman admitted that he let his emotions come out yesterday as it was a very important century for him. Former England captain further added that he always doubted himself throughout his career and would continue to do so in future.

“I’ve doubted myself for 12 years and I’ll probably continue to doubt myself but obviously the longer it goes the harder it becomes. Cook further added.

Alastair Cook said that he is quite proud of his innings but at the same time he is disappointed. He said that he felt disappointed that his innings came too late to affect the result of the series. “But I suppose that’s why I can be quite proud… Going to the well again and delivering a performance like that was pleasing. It’s just a shame it’s three-four weeks too late, I’ll have to live with that for a long time but it’s nice to score a few.” The left-handed batsman said

Back to his best

Cook said that he felt his movements were back in the innings. He felt that he was probably batting similarly in the previous innings in the series but it was not coming right for some reason.

“I played quite nicely yesterday, I got to 40 and I kind of felt like the old movements were back. They probably weren’t that different to where they were in the other games… If I could put my finger on exactly what it is, it could save me a lot of strife.” Former England captain concluded
