In the game against South Africa, Bangladesh played some excellent cricket after being put in to bat first. Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan led the charge as the team recorded its highest total ever in an ODI game. After Soumya Sarkar took the team off to a flyer with a 30-ball 42, the duo joined hands to stitch together a wonderful partnership of 142 runs. While the wicket-keeper scored 78 off 80 balls, the legendary all-rounder accrued 75 from 84 balls.

Mahmudullah, with a 33-ball 46 provided his team with the final impetus as Bangladesh got to 330/6 in 50 overs. Their previous highest score in the format was 329/6 against Pakistan in 2015. Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris and Imran Tahir picked up two wickets each in the innings.

A tricky chase for South Africa; opposition ends up being too good for them

South Africa’s chase didn’t pan out as per the plans. Quinton de Kock, the in-form batsman, was run out for 23 after a horrible mix up. Most of the Proteas batsmen got starts but no one could capitalise and register a big score. Faf du Plessis, with a 53-ball 62 led the charge for his team. Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen got into the forties but couldn’t kick on further. David Miller also looked good for his 38.

The Bangladesh bowlers kept pegging in with regular wickets, thus putting the opposition under constant pressure. JP Duminy tried hard towards the end but the asking rate got too big on him. Mustafizur Rahman got him bowled when he was on 45. South Africa only got to 309 runs in 50 overs and lost the match by 21 runs. The team will rue their death bowling in this match.

Here are the Bangladesh Player Ratings for the match

Tamim Iqbal – 3/10

It wasn’t the most fluent of stays out in the middle for Bangladesh opener. Recovering from his wrist injury, he had a troubled time. The opener struck two boundaries in his knock where he scored 16 runs from 29 balls. His struggles culminated as he poked one off the bowling of Andile Phehlukwayo which comfortably carried to the keeper.

Soumya Sarkar – 6.5/10

While Tamim Iqbal was looking to take his time at the other end, it was Soumya Sarkar who took the attack to the opposition and eased the pressure of his partner. The left-hander hit 9 fours in his innings and mustered 42 runs off 30 balls before he got out.

Shakib Al Hasan – 9.5/10

Shakib came out to bat at number three and played great cricket. He rotated the strike well, respected the good deliveries and latched onto the bad ones. The all-rounder got 75 off 84 balls before Imran Tahir bowled him. With the ball, he dismissed Aiden Markram who was looking set for a big one.

Mushfiqur Rahim – 9/10

Mushfiqur Rahim was involved in a great partnership with Shakib. He ensured that he kept the same kind of intensity going from his end as well and the duo complemented each other really well. The 31-year-old scored 78 runs off 80 balls and hit 8 boundaries.

Mohammad Mithun – 3.5/10

There were still some overs left when Mithun walked out to bat. He tried taking his time, hit two fours and a six but couldn’t go on to make a big score. He got out for run-a-ball 21 and could’ve done better with the bat.

Mahmudullah – 8/10
