India and England are all set to renew their famous rivalry in Tests. Both the teams are scheduled to play four Tests against each other. The much-anticipated series is scheduled to get underway on February 5. Chennai will host the first two games before the caravan moves to Ahmedabad for the next two Tests.

The series is of huge importance for both teams as it will be their final chance to book a place in the final of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship. With New Zealand already qualifying for the final, just one spot is up for the grabs. Both India and England are in contention for the final although the former has a slight advantage in the race.

India need to win by at least a 2-1 margin in order to book their place in the final. On the other hand, England have a tougher task at their hands as they need to win at least three matches in order to seal their place in the final. And as both the teams gear up for the huge series, we are taking a look at their head-to-head record in Tests.

India and England first locked horns against each other in Tests in 1932 at the iconic Lord’s. The game had taken place from June 25 to 28. England had won the game by 158 runs. It took India nearly 20 years to register a win over England in Tests. That historic win came in 1952 when India beat the English side by an innings and 8 runs in Chennai in 1952.

India had to wait for ten years for their next win against England. The back to back wins in 1962 in Kolkata and Chennai saw India win their first Test series against England. Overall, both the teams have met 122 times in Tests so far. England have clearly the upper hand in this rivalry as they have almost twice the number of wins when compared to India.

England have won 47 Tests in this rivalry compared to India’s 26. The other 49 games ended in a draw.  India, however, have the upper hand in Tests when they have played against England at home. Both the teams have played 60 Tests in India so far. The hosts have won 19 of those Tests while England emerged victorious on 13 occasions.
