Ravindra Jadeja single-handedly destroyed Sri Lanka in the first Test match in Mohali to script a massive win for India by an innings and 222 runs. Continuing from his batting form, Jadeja took five wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and fours scalps for 46 runs in the second to demolish the Lankan Lions. He became the third Indian after Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar to score over 150 runs and snare five wickets in the same Test match.

Speaking of Sri Lanka’s first innings, Pathum Nissanka remained unbeaten on 61 runs as Jadeja and Ashwin took seven wickets in between them to bundle out the visitors for just 174 runs. Skipper Rohit Sharma then decided to enforce the follow-on as the tourists came out to bat again. R Ashwin dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne again for the second time in the match, seventh overall, with first-innings half-centurion Nissanka scoring only six runs. Mohammed Shami got captain Dimuth Karunaratne out for 27 runs.

Niroshan Dickwella scored an unbeaten half-century but India’s spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja snared four wickets each to dismiss the Island nation for another low score of just 178 runs. Both Indian spinners shared 15 scalps in total in the match as the Lankans were a no match for the strong Indian team. Jadeja finished the game, which he will remember for a long long time, with 175 not out in the first innings and match figures of 9/87. Unsurprisingly, Jadeja was declared the Player of the Match for his heroic and all-round performance in the game.
