Albeit the Indian batsmen haven’t shown much consistency in the first three Tests against England, the bowlers, especially the seamers have been stupendous as they have managed to bowl the Brits’ out on every other occasion in the erstwhile encounters. They have taken 38 out of the 50 English wickets to have fallen at Edgbaston, Lord’s and The Trent Bridge respectively.

They were one of the primary reasons behind India’s thumping 203-run victory in the third Test in Nottingham after tasting defeats in the first two matches. Ishant Sharma is currently their leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons that the speedsters have weaved cobwebs of fright in the minds of the English batsmen.

We have seen that there was a fear

“Before we saw that the foreign pacers bowl bouncers and our lower-order batsmen would get out easily to them but the way the Indian pacers have bowled, we have seen that there was a fear in the eyes of the England batsmen. When Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings came out to bat in the second innings, they were clueless and they will be out soon,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying in India Today.

“And that is exactly what happened. Ishant Sharma sent them back to the dressing room. When Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson came out to bat and even Chris Woakes, who was out in both the innings to a bouncer, it was looking like the Indian bowlers were giving them a taste of their own medicine,” the 69-year-old added.

India, despite their triumph in the previous match, are 1-2 down in the series and still need to do a lot of work in order to draw level or even win the series. The fourth Test starts on August 30 and the onus will again be on the pacers to deliver the goods.
