Dinesh Karthik since the Champions Trophy has not had many opportunities to wear the blue jersey. Despite that, the middle-order batsman from Tamil Nadu has been in bright form in the domestic season. Every time the Champions Trophy is around the corner; the middle-order batsman plays his skin out in the domestic arena to get back into the national team.

Despite his bright form, he was overlooked for this year’s squad and unlike last year, he would be forced to watch the action from thousand miles away.

Suresh Raina has been a well-known limited overs specialist not only for the country but also in the IPL, where he currently is relishing the captaincy at Gujarat Lions. The left-hander has been removed from the salary cap despite featuring for the national team in as early as February 2017 against England.

IPL is one such tournament which brings out the best in Suresh Raina, and being the most consistent batsman in the history of the league, managed to score over 400 runs once more. However, he was not picked in the Indian squad and is one of the 5 standby players for the Champions Trophy.

MS Dhoni, the only captain to win all the ICC trophies has retired from the longest form of cricket. The decision to quit from Test cricket came in as a shocker for the Indian fans as there were no signs or forthcoming of this event. The former captain, however, still features for the national team in the limited-overs cricket.

As recently as 2016, Dhoni announced his decision to step down as a captain as he felt it was the right time for Virat Kohli to step up as the captain ahead of the Champions Trophy. The series against England was his first since 2008 as a wicketkeeper-batsman devoid of captaincy.

The form since then has been commendable, and Dhoni also managed to score his first 50 in T20 cricket after getting out in the 40’s many times. He also scored a century against England in an ODI earlier this year but has had a mixed bag in IPL so far. His form would be extremely crucial for India’s chances in the Champions Trophy.
