The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a witness to several changes ever since the inception of the tournament in 2008. From teams, jerseys to even the auctions, a number of changes have been implemented as the league has progressed over the years. The strategic time-out has been in place since 2009 and has only been altered once in 2010.

Nevertheless, the rule is set to witness another change after eight seasons. As per reports in The Times of India, the style of the signal will be changed from ‘T’ to pointing at the wrist with raised hands. The change has been brought forth owing to the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS) for the maiden time, which also has a ‘T’ sign, in the tournament.

The latest alterations in the T20 league

The decision was taken during a meeting between four referees and 15 umpires. Manu Nayyar, Javagal Srinath, Anil Chaudhary, C Shamshuddin, Nitin Menon, Dennis Burns, the ICC umpires coach zeroed in on the method and discussed the implementation of the same in the upcoming games.  Most of the umpires present in the meet weren’t experienced the handling of DRS.

Meanwhile, there will be a total of four strategic time-outs throughout the duration of the game. Each will be slotted for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and can be taken twice during one inning- one by the fielding unit and another by the batting team. The bowling side can ask for it between the sixth and ninth over while the batting unit can opt for it between 13 and 16 overs.

The mega event is a couple of days away with the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings fighting it out for the opening game at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how the latest implementations work out during the series.
