The 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League is just about 2 days old but the tournament has already managed to create some headlines. While most of the headlines have been about the spectacular performances on the field, a recent incident during the Rajasthan Royals vs Kings XI Punjab contest has created an outcry on the social media. During the course of the match, RR batter Jos Buttler looked onsong as he hit a brilliant fifty to guide his side in the run chase of 184.
During the 13th over of the match, the KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin had the ball in hand. Obviously, he was worried about the game slipping away from the hands of his side. In an attempt to be clever, Ashwin ended up catching Jos Buttler off guard and out of his crease when he reached the bowling mark on the final ball of the over. Ashwin, keeping a close eye on Buttler’s movements, saw the batter take his bat out of the crease at the non-striker end.
Without wasting much of his time, Ashwin whipped off the bails at the non-striker end and Buttler was found short of his ground. Going by the rules of the game, this was indeed a dismissal and is prominently known as ‘Mankad dismissal’. The umpire ruled it out, and despite several attempts from Buttler to hold talks with Ashwin, the decision was not overturned.
Usually, in cases like these, a warning is what the bowler issues to the batter. There was nothing of this sort here, and Ashwin was clearly having his plans to dismiss Buttler, in whichever way possible. An absolutely livid Buttler had to leave the field after scoring 69 off 43 deliveries.
Jason Roy reacts
Soon after the incident, Buttler’s English teammate Jason Roy was quick to take to Twitter to express his disappointment on the entire episode. He exclaimed that this is totally a shocking move by someone as experienced as R Ashwin. “Ashwin, that’s shocking behaviour! Very disappointed to see that,” Jason Roy wrote in his tweet.
