The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) auction took place in Jaipur on Tuesday where a total of 351 players were supposed to go under the hammer. However, the event was fast-tracked after the first half and a total of 59 players were picked out of the 70 available slots. The fast bowlers wee on demand on the day as the franchises came with a perfect strategy.
The most surprising buy of the day was Varun Chakravarthy who raked in a whopping amount of Rs 8.4 crore by the Kings XI Punjab. The cricketer had made a name for him in the Tamin Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year with his mystery spin bowling. The other domestic name which was the talk of the town was Shivam Dube who was snaffled by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 5 crore.
Unadkat once again surprises
However, Jaydev Unadkat also hogged a lot of attention on the day as the Rajasthan Royals surprisingly went bonkers for him after releasing the fast bowlers last month. They shelled out a huge amount of Rs 8.4 crores for him once again. Prayas Ray Barman and Prabhsimran Singh were the surprising late buys on the day who were picked by RCB and KXIP for Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 4.8 crore respectively.
The big names which were sold at the lost moment were Yuvraj Singh and Martin Guptill. While India’s World Cup hero’s services were secured by the Mumbai Indians, the Kiwi opener was picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for their respectively base prices. The Caribbean star Shimron Hetmyer was unlucky one would say as the RCB is set to pay him Rs 4.2 crore. But he deserved more amount than that.
Having said that, he could turn out to be a smart buy from the Bangalore franchise with the way the left-hander goes about his batting. Joe Denly was another late addition who was grabbed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for his base price. In the end, the auction was concluded in style by the Royals as they picked three players on the trot at their base price to finish the event on a high note.
