Following two defeats on the trot, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) managed to garner their sixth victory in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The Kane Williamson-captained team thumped the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 45 runs at the RGI Stadium in Hyderabad. SRH remained at the fifth position. Punjab now need to win their remaining two games and also sort their NRR in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Warner takes charge

Punjab won the toss and elected to field first. David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha opened the batting and put on 78 off 38 balls for the opening wicket. Murugan Ashwin gave KXIP their first breakthrough, dismissing Saha, who scored 28 off 13. Thereafter, Manish Pandey joined Warner in the middle and the duo added 82 runs in 55 deliveries. Warner, playing his last game, accomplished his fifty in 38 balls.

Pandey also looked good and he notched 36 off 25 balls with three fours and six. Ravi Ashwin dismissed him in the 16th over. Warner carried on and scored 81 off 56 balls with seven fours and a couple of sixes. Mohammad Nabi and Kane Williamson chipped in with short, yet breezy knocks of 20 and 14 to propel SRH’s score to 212. For Punjab, Mohammed Shami and Ravi Ashwin got two wickets each.

KL Rahul tries valiantly

The start wasn’t a great one for the Sunrisers as Khaleel Ahmed picked up the prized wicket of Chris Gayle. Nevertheless, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul took charge and injected momentum into the innings with a 60-run partnership. Agarwal was looking ominous, having scored 27 off 18 and he perished to Rashid Khan in the ninth over. Nicholas Pooran also went after getting 21 off 10 deliveries.

Pooran was Khaleel’s second wicket. Rashid came into the party and picked up David Miller and Ravi Ashwin in consecutive balls. Rahul didn’t give up and got his half-century off 38 balls. He carried on and kept finding the boundary without much fuss. At the other end, Prabhsimran Singh strained to find his timing. Rahul went on to score 79 from 56 with four fours and five sixes, but the knock went in vain.
