The last match of the ongoing Indian Premier League’s (IPL) league stage will be played between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The playoff race is still on with KKR needing to win this game to qualify for the playoffs. Moreover, if SRH defeats RCB, then they will have to win by a huge margin to better the Orange Army’s net run-rate.

MI, on the other hand, also have to win to seal their position in the top two and set up the first qualifier clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Delhi Capitals (DC) though would be hoping that the Rohit Sharma-led side comes up short in this encounter. Mumbai lost their previous face-off comfortably against the KKR and they would be itching to end KKR’s campaign on Sunday. Having said that, it won’t be easy for the home side as Dinesh Karthik’s men have found their groove just in time.

KKR brushed aside the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their previous must-win game in Mohali. Though the likes of Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill did superbly to chase down 183 comfortably their bowling continues to be a worry. Moreover, the fact that they are playing on a flat Wankhede surface makes the case even more curious. Sandeep Warrier has performed decently in limited chances but the spinners should come to the party big time if KKR are to upset MI and qualify for the playoffs.

Pitch Report

The pitch at the Wankhede stadium is generally full of runs. Though it tends to turn square at times, the dew might negate that possibility on Sunday. The team winning the toss is expected to field first given that no score is safe at the venue.

Weather Conditions

The temperature will hover in the mid-30s whole day in Mumbai and will come down to 28-29 Degrees Celsius during the match. But what will trouble the players is the extreme humidity. Dew will also play a crucial role as it becomes very difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball. No rain is in the forecast.

Team Combinations

Mumbai Indians

This is the favourite phase for the three-time champions. They normally up their game during the business end of the tournament and believe in going with the same team more often than not. With the departure of Jason Behrendorff, they are lacking in a specialist bowler. Barinder Sran hasn’t done much in the two matches he’s played while Evin Lewis is also failing to impress. Both of them might get another chance before the playoffs.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Evin Lewis, Suryakumar Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Rahul Chahar, Barinder Sran, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah.

Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR have finally found their perfect combination and have two matches on the bounce now. Andre Russell is finally batting at four which he should’ve done long ago while Sandeep Warrier is also a shining light with the ball for the Men in Purple and Gold. Harry Gurney has gone off colour suddenly and he might get replaced by Lockie Ferguson in his match.

Probable XI: Chris Lynn, Shubman Gill, Robin Uthappa, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla, Lockie Ferguson/Harry Gurney, Sandeep Warrier.

Probable Top Performers

Rohit Sharma – MI

Mumbai has to win this match to climb to the top two and Rohit Sharma loves the big stage. The MI skipper hasn’t got going this season which is a big worry not only for his franchise but also for the Indian team. With the playoffs approaching, Rohit himself would want to get amongst the runs as soon as possible.

Andre Russell – KKR

Russell is batting at four now and he is more dangerous than ever. Mumbai faced his wrath in the previous face-off not long ago when he had scored 80 runs off just 40 balls. The Caribbean has to fire if KKR are to win this game by a big margin and the all-rounder very rarely disappoints.
