IPL 2020 vs PSL 2020: Comparing the prize money distribution
IPL or PSL - Which league pays the most?
Pakistan Super League’s fifth season came to an end just a week after IPL 2020. Both Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars reached the final for the first time and thus PSL saw a new winner this time in Karachi Kings. The tournament caught all the eyeballs as it was the first edition which was entirely organized in Pakistan. It also grabbed some news because the playoffs stage was organized 8 months after the league stage due to COVID-19.
It has been a tendency since the beginning of PSL that people try to compare it with its Indian counterpart. Although the pay structure and the amount of money earned through sponsors are completely different, the comparison of neighbouring leagues is never-ending. They compare the players that participate, crowds in the stadium, the salaries of players, and everything.
Let’s compare the prize money of IPL 2020 and PSL 2020
In terms of prize money, the Indian Premier League is quite ahead of PSL as the tournament receives whopping sponsorship due to its global fan following. The winner of IPL 2020, Mumbai Indians earned INR 20 crores, and the runner-up Delhi Capitals earned INR 12.5 crores. On the other hand, the winner of PSL 2020, Karachi Kings received prize money of INR 3.75 crores and the runner up, Lahore Qalandars won INR 1.5 crores.
However, in individual prizes, PSL is matching the prize money with arguably the richest league in the world. As the Player of the Tournament, best batsman, best bowler, best fielder, best keeper, emerging player winners of PSL 2020 received INR 10 Lakhs each. In IPL 2020 as well, the orange cap winner, purple cap winner, most valuable player, and the emerging player, most sixes award, power player award winners were also tagged with prize money of INR 10 lakhs each.
Though PSL is paying identical in the individual prizes, IPL kept a wholesome amount for the third and fourth position teams as well. Both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore took home a massive amount of INR 8.75 crores each. While PSL 2020 does not provide any prize money to the third and fourth-ranked teams. Interestingly, these two teams individually received more money (INR 17.5 crores) than the whole prize money on offer in PSL, which is INR 7.5 crores.
