The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a mega tournament where the greats of the game donn the jersey of one of the eight franchises and fight against each other to claim the T20 title. The tournament which was started by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after seeing the success of the 2007 T20 tournament has come a long way since its inception. It is now renowned as one of the biggest sports events across the globe.

The much-awaited 13th edition of the cash-rich league is all set to get underway from September 19, with the final to take place on November 10. The tournament was supposed to start from March 29 but was delayed and has now been moved out of the country in the view of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It will now be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) across three venues namely Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

The T20 extravaganza will feature 56 matches across eight franchises namely Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Delhi Capitals (DC), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). The inaugural fixture of this year’s edition will feature defending champions Mumbai Indians against runners-up Chennai Super Kings.

Motto of the Indian Premier League

Every year, a shiny golden trophy is presented to the champions and it stays with them for one year until the next edition of the league commences. Along with the name, Indian Premier League, a script in Sanskrit is engraved on the trophy. Though the script is quite visible on the trophy, not many are aware of its meaning. The lines written in Sanskrit depicts the motto of the IPL which is, “Where talent meets opportunity.”

A vedic school had posted the meaning of the script with the caption, “Not many of us know, the motto of IPL is in Sanskrit; same is inscribed on IPL trophy as well. #IPL It is “Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi”, means “Where talent meets opportunity”. Hindi – जहां प्रतिभा अवसर प्राप्त करती है ।”

Over the years, the T20 Championship has emerged as a platform where the young lads get an opportunity to showcase their talent and rub shoulders with the greats of the game. It acts as a stepping stone for them to make headlines and grab a spot in their country’s national team.

There have been a number of cricketers who were unknown entities prior to the tournament, but grabbed eyeballs with their performance in the extravaganza like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Rishabh Pant and many more.
