After three consecutive losses, Punjab Kings finally have a win under their belt. Playing against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, PBKS scripted a stunning victory in a low-scoring affair by nine wickets. It was a captain’s day in Chennai as both MI skipper Rohit Sharma and Punjab skipper KL Rahul led from the front.

The match commenced with skipper KL Rahul winning the toss and inviting Rohit Sharma & his men to post the total on the board. Batting first, the defending champions got off to a torrid start as their opening woes continued. Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock lost his wicket in the second over only to Deepak Hooda.

After this, Mumbai managed to spring a surprise as instead of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan walked in the middle to bat at number three. However, Kishan failed to capitalize on the opportunity provided to him as he lost his wicket in the seventh over.

Though wickets kept falling at one end, skipper Rohit Sharma held his fort and kept ticking the scoreboard regularly. Ishan’s dismissal was followed by Suryakumar and Rohit scripting a crucial 76-run partnership. Rohit Sharma emerged as the highest run-getter for the five-time champion with his knock of 63 runs off 52 deliveries while Surya also added 33 runs.

However, another failure of MI’s lower-order resulted in the team posting a below-par total of 131 runs in their 20 overs while losing six wickets. Meanwhile, the Punjab bowlers ruled the show as with their disciplined bowling effort they managed to restrict Mumbai’s explosive line-up. For PKBS, Mohammed Shami and Ravi Bishnoi were the pick of the bowlers as they scalped two wickets each. Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh also had one under their belt.

KL Rahul and Chris Gayle take PBKS home

131 was too low of a target for the Mumbai Indians bowlers to defend but with their resilience, they tried their best to help the team cross the line. Both the openers of Punjab Kings including the likes of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal looked in fine touch in the middle as they stitched a 53-run partnership.

However, Rahul Chahar gave the first and only breakthrough to the side during the eighth over as he scalped the wicket of Mayank Agarwal. This was followed by KL Rahul and Chris Gayle taking Punjab over the line to register their second win in the tournament. Rahul played a captain’s knock as he scored 60 runs off 52 deliveries. Gayle was also at his fluent best as he aptly supported the skipper by adding 43 runs in 35 balls.
