Rajasthan Royals have managed to keep themselves alive in the 2021 Indian Premier League after they beat the Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets. Most importantly, they moved to fifth in the points table and winning the game with as many as 16 balls to spare. For the Super Kings, the hefty defeat can be termed a wake-up call, before they end the league with their last two matches.

Ruturaj Gaikwad shines

After being put in to bat first, the Super Kings made a steady start as they scored only 44 runs in the powerplay. Rahul Tewatia struck first blood, getting rid of Faf du Plessis, who scored 25 with two fours and one six. Suresh Raina’s dreadful run of form continued as he became Tewatia’s second victim. Moeen Ali promised with a 17-ball 21 before Tewatia picked him up as his third wicket.

Chetan Sakariya also added to the wickets’ column, dismissing Ambati Rayudu. From there on, Ruturaj Gaikwad took over. The right-hander went at about a run-a-ball in the first half of his innings, but then stepped on the gas. He went on to stay unbeaten on 101 off 60 with nine fours and five sixes. Ravindra Jadeja was severe on Mustafizur Rahman. CSK racked up 189 for four in 20 overs.

Royals go berserk

The Royals made a mockery of the target to begin with. Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal blew away the CSK bowling with a partnership of 77 runs for the opening wicket off 5.2 overs. Shardul Thakur gave the Super Kings their first wicket, nipping out Lewis, who made 27 at a strike rate of 225. Jaiswal, in the meantime, went on to smash a fifty off 19 and looked at his stupendous best.

KM Asif cut short Jaiswal’s blitz after the left-hander carted six fours and three sixes. Even as the openers perished, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube didn’t allow any sort of pressure to build. Samson got out after scoring 28 off 24 with four fours. The left-handed Dube went on to stay unbeaten on 64 off 42 with four fours and sixes apiece. The win should give RR a lot of confidence going forward.
