Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be missing the services of their first-choice number three batter, Moeen Ali, for the tournament-opener against last year’s finalist, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The all-rounder is still in England after having some travel (Visa) issues.
To note, a player has to serve a three-day isolation period after joining the squad. The defending champions are already without the services of their prominent all-rounder, Deepak Chahar, for a better part of the season, and Moeen’s absence, at least for one game, adds to the yellow army’s woes. The yellow army has several players in their squad who can replace the all-rounder. Meanwhile, here are the-
Top three choices for Moeen Ali’s backup in CSK setup
1. Robin Uthappa
The yellow army have previously played with three overseas players in the playing XI and there might be chances of that happening once again. A prominent contender for the number three spot, Robin Uthappa, made the most of the handful of opportunities provided to him in IPL 2021 and he might be given a chance.
In the IPL 2022 mega auction, the defending champions showed faith in the senior batter and bagged him for INR two crore. The right-handed batter played a crucial role in CSK’s performances in the last edition, particularly during the playoffs. He replaced veteran batter, Suresh Raina, in the squad and played a key role in the title win.
Talking about Robin’s numbers in the IPL, the 36-year-old has played a total of 193 matches in which he has scored 4722 runs, at a decent average of 27.94. The right-handed batter plays with a strike rate of 130.15 and has struck 25 fifties in the tournament.
