In a one-sided affair, Delhi Capitals thrashed the Punjab Kings in the group-stage encounter played at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on April 20 (Wednesday). DC was a better side in all three departments of the game as they mauled PBKS by nine wickets.
DC skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. His decision was proved right by the bowlers as Khaleel Ahmed, Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav scalped two wickets each and ran a riot over PBKS. Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman also scalped a wicket.
For PBKS, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma was the top scorer making 32 off 23 balls. skipper Mayank Agarwal (24 off 15 balls), Shahrukh Khan (12 off 20 balls), and Rahul Chahar (12 off 12 balls) were the only batters to reach the double-figure mark for the Kings.
DC cruised to victory in their chase
As expected, both the openers, Prithvi Shaw (41 off 20 balls), and David Warner (60 off 30 balls) went hard after the PBKS bowlers during the field restrictions. Spinner Rahul Chahar was the only successful bowler for the Kings as he grabbed the wicket of Shaw.
After the fall of Shaw, young batter Sarfaraz Khan (12 off 13 balls), played a safe knock and ensured that no stutters are faced by DC in their chase. For PBKS bowlers, it was a day to forget as the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Vaibhav Arora, Arshdeep Singh, and Nathan Ellis went wicketless. As a result, DC, under the leadership of skipper Pant, managed to get vital points in the points table. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav was adjudged Player of the Match for scalping two wickets of Rabada and Ellis.
After winning tonight’s encounter in IPL 2022, DC has taken the sixth spot. Meanwhile, PBKS has slipped to the number eight position. Gujarat Titans (First), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) complete the top four teams in the points table.
