Punjab Kings (PBKS) gave a reality check to table-toppers Gujarat Titans in a group stage match on May 3 (Tuesday). PBKS, on the back of pacer Kagiso Rabada and Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan, managed to pip the Titans. The Kings have made a comeback after a series of disappointing results themselves.

Winning the toss, GT skipper Hardik Pandya decided to bat first at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. However, his decision backfired soon. GT openers had a decent start with 17/0 in just two overs. However, Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha got out soon.

Skipper Hardik Pandya could not get going as well. The GT innings were held together by youngster Sai Sudharsan who scored a hard-fought 65 off 50 balls. Apart from Sudharsan, none of the GT batters got going. For PBKS, South African pacer Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers scalping four wickets.

PBKS chased the target easily

In reply, PBKS was given an early jolt as English batter Jonny Bairstow was scalped for only one run. However, Shikhar Dhawan (62*), Bhanuka Rajapaksa (40), and Liam Livingstone (30*) ensured that PBKS face no hiccups and win the contest easily against the table toppers.

For GT, Mohammed Shami, and Lockie Ferguson were the only successful bowlers as they scalped one wicket each. Apart from them, none of the other bowlers managed to get a wicket. As a result, PBKS cruised to the target easily and get two vital points on the table. Pacer Kagiso Rabada was adjudged player of the match for his excellent spell of bowling.

Despite losing their match, GT is still at the top of the points table. Meanwhile, PBKS is in the fifth spot. LSG, RR, and SRH are the other top three teams on the points table.
