The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a revelation in terms of the entertainment it provides to cricket fans.  It brings the best T20 players to compete against each other and provides the platform for some of them to revive their careers. From time to time, there have been some changes brought by the IPL’s  Governing Council to improve the overall experience of the games in the tournament.

Ahead of IPL 2022, the council announced a couple of major changes. DRS has been increased to two per innings, new batters to take strike after a catch dismissal, matches to be rescheduled if the teams cannot field a team due to Covid cases, and the use of league stage rankings to decide the winner if Super Overs cannot be played to further decide the winner. Apart from these changes, there are some more rules, which can be laid out in the upcoming editions of the tournament.

1. Deduction of one point for slow over-rate

In 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced a new rule, which will penalize the team for slow over-rates. This term relates to the amount of time needed by the teams to complete their full quota of overs across all the formats of the game. In terms of T20Is, the teams will have to have an over rate of 14.11 per hour. If the teams don’t maintain this rate at the first ball of the 20th over, they will have one fewer fielder (four) outside the 30-yard circle.

The above rule was implemented by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in the inaugural season of ‘The Hundred’, and ICC followed it up to implement it in international cricket. In the World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle, a slow over-rate has caused the teams like India and England to lose crucial WTC points.

Until this season, the captains have been fined a share of their match fee for slow over-rate. A couple of skippers, including Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma, have been reprimanded for the same. However, if the slow over-rate is to be implemented in the right manner, the Council may look to deduct 1 point from the team, if the offense happens for the second time.
