Chennai Super Kings tamed the Mumbai Indians in the first match of Phase 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL). MS Dhoni and his boys produced a disciplined performance on the field and beat the Mumbai Indians side comfortably by 20 runs.

For Mumbai, a few batsmen got off to starts, but none of them could convert their starts into big scores. The Mumbai openers, Quinton de Kock, and Anmolpreet Singh dazzled briefly, but both of them perished against the run of play. While de Kock scored a breezy 12-ball 17, Anmolpreet helped himself to 16 off 14 deliveries.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan too failed to stand up for the five-time IPL champions. While Yadav scored just 3, Kishan was dismissed for 11. Stand-in-skipper Kieron Pollard was the danger man as far as the CSK side was concerned (remember the carnage he caused against CSK in the first leg?) But then, Josh Hazlewood trapped the West Indian plumb in front of the stumps for 15.

Dwayne Bravo was the star performer for the Chennai side with the ball in hand. The 37-year-old picked up 3 wickets in his quota of 4 overs and leaked 25 runs. Deepak Chahar chipped in with a couple of wickets as well.

Ruturaj Gaikwad emerges as the lone ‘spark’ for CSK

Ruturaj Gaikwad emerged as the lone ‘spark’ for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) side with the willow. The right-hander batted right through the innings and scored a handsome 88* off just 58 deliveries, to help the MS Dhoni-led side post a fighting total of 156/6 on the board.

The CSK top order came a cropper with the bat in hand. The Chennai scorecard read 24/4 at the end of 6 overs, and the three-time IPL champions were in danger of being bowled out for a meager total. But then, Gaikwad, along with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo resurrected the CSK innings.

While Jadeja scored a sedate 26 off 33 deliveries, Bravo blazed away to 23 at a strike rate of 287.50. For the Mumbai Indians, the fast-bowling troika of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, and Adam Milne scalped 2 wickets each. With this victory, the CSK side has moved to the top of the points table, while the Mumbai side is placed at 4th place.
