The Orange and Purple Caps in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are wonderful concepts, acknowledging players during the tournament, not just after its conclusion. While the Orange Cap is eventually won by the highest run-getter in a season, the Purple Cap goes to the highest wicket-taker.

The first-ever season of the IPL was hosted in 2008. Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir picked up 22 wickets and won the Purple Cap. Meanwhile, in 2025, the most recent season, Prasidh Krishna was conferred the coveted award after bagging 25 scalps.

Over the years, there have been 16 different winners of the Purple Cap. Only Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have won the award more than once. While the West Indies all-rounder won in 2013 and 2015, Bhuvneshwar is the only one to win it in consecutive seasons in 2016 and 2017.

Bravo and Harshal Patel share the record for taking the most wickets in a particular season. While Bravo bagged 32 wickets in 2013, Patel matched that record in 2021.

    IPL Purple Cap Trivia

    • Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to be awarded the Purple Cap for taking 22 wickets in 11 matches in the 2008 season.
    • The record of most wickets in a single edition is jointly held by Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel. Bravo scalped 32 wickets in the 2015 season while Patel had 32 victims to his name in the 2021 season.
    • Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler to have won the Purple Cap in successive editions of the IPL (2016, 2017)

Rules for IPL Purple Cap 2026

    • The Purple Cap is awarded to the leading wicket-taker of the IPL season.
    • The bowler with the most wickets in the tournament during the season is allowed to wear the Cap in the field.
    • In an event of a tie, the Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler with a better economy rate.

Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the only two cricketers to have won the Purple Cap award on two occasions. While Bravo won the award in 2013 and 2015, Kumar laid his hands on the Purple Cap in 2016 and 2017.
