Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has been the eye of the storm lately for making a controversial remark. While commentating during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2021 game, the southpaw, while talking about Chennai’s culture, mentioned that he’s a Brahmin. A certain section of fans wasn’t amused with Raina’s statements as they accused him of promoting casteism. Subsequently, Twitter got flooded with criticism for the southpaw.
While Raina is yet to clear his stance on his comments, his fans have come out in support. Several netizens defended the left-handed batsman, saying he was talking about his culture and not about the superiority of his clan. Many also believe that Raina’s comments were blown out of proportion and there wasn’t any requirement of a hullabaloo over the episode.
Suresh Raina receives support from fans
Subsequently, #IsupportSureshRaina became one of the top trends on Twitter. For the unversed, Raina made the controversial comment while talking about his time with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings. “I think I’m also Brahmin. I have been playing since 2004 in Chennai. I love the culture, I love my teammates,” he had said.
While Raina mostly talked about Chennai’s atmosphere, his ‘Bramhin’ comment hogged the maximum attention. Several fans found his remarks derogatory and the trolling game began. The left-handed batsman was even accused of demeaning people following other religions and heritage. However, all Twitter users don’t share the same opinion.
Fans lent their support to the CSK star by making #IsupportSureshRaina popular. There have been many posts on social media with this hashtag. It’s indeed a fact that casteism is a major issue in India. Hence, celebrities tend to avoid making any statement on this subject. However, Suresh Raina, although candidly, talked about his culture, and Twitter got divided into two halves. With the veteran batter being active on social media, it would be interesting to see if he makes any clarification.
Meanwhile, Raina, who retired from international cricket last year, was last seen in the now-postponed IPL 2021. He played some fine knocks in the tournament and would like to shine when the competition resumes in UAE in September.
Meanwhile, here’s how Twitter users have been supporting Raina

If a politician tells about his caste, then he is right, but if a cricketer @ImRaina speaks then he is wrong. Why? However law is equal for all. #ISupportSureshRaina

When other castes identify their personality by telling their caste then why can't a brahmin identify himself by telling his caste I am personally with Suresh Raina ji.

What's wrong with being proud of your caste?
He didn't abuse any caste, He just said, I am Brahmin
And I don't think it has hurt the sentiment of any caste or religion.#IsupportSureshRaina pic.twitter.com/3Yj1bZoADn— Karamveer Prasad (@KaramveerPrasa8) July 23, 2021
